Advisory Work That Begins With Respect
Mentari has been a quiet, steady presence for small business owners in Penang since 2014. We believe that good advisory starts with listening, not prescribing.

Started at a Kopitiam Table, Still the Same Spirit
Mentari began in 2014 when two advisors who had spent years inside larger firms decided to work differently. They had noticed that small business owners — the people running a single kedai, a small workshop, a modest service practice — rarely got the kind of attentive, unhurried advice that larger clients received as standard. The big consultancies had little reason to sit patiently with a two-person bakery or a small wholesaler on Lebuh Pantai.
The name Mentari — sunrise in Malay — reflects how the practice was conceived: not as a dramatic intervention, but as the quiet, gradual arrival of clarity at the beginning of a day's work. Nothing sudden. Nothing overwhelming. Just a gentle increase in light.
Over the years, we have kept the practice deliberately small. We do not chase volume. We take on only as many clients as we can genuinely serve with care. Most of our clients come through personal referrals from owners we have worked with before, which tells us something about whether the approach is working.
Our Mission
To Help Owners Think More Clearly
We do not aim to transform businesses or to impose plans. Our role is narrower and, we think, more useful: to give owners a reliable outside perspective and a quiet space to think things through without commercial pressure.
Most owners already know roughly what needs attention. They simply need someone to help them sort through the noise, sequence the priorities, and feel more settled about the path forward. That is what we do.

The Team
The People You Will Work With
Mentari is a small team by design. Every client works with a senior advisor, not a junior intermediary.
Ahmad Hafizi
Founding Principal
Ahmad spent twelve years advising SMEs across the northern corridor before co-founding Mentari. He leads the Whole Market Programme engagements and enjoys the longer rhythms of ongoing advisory work.
Su Lin
Senior Advisor
Su Lin joined Mentari in 2017 after a background in retail operations and business planning. She leads the First Stall Review sessions and has a talent for helping owners see their situation with fresh eyes.
Rajan Kumar
Advisory Associate
Rajan supports the Market Day Advisory engagements, bringing a background in accounting and operational management across the food and trades sectors in Penang and Kedah.
How We Work
Standards We Hold Ourselves To
These are not marketing phrases. They are the practical commitments that shape every engagement we take on.
Full Confidentiality
Everything discussed in sessions remains strictly between us. We do not share client information with third parties under any circumstances.
Independent Advice
We have no commercial relationships with service providers or suppliers. Our suggestions are based on what seems right for you, not on referral arrangements.
Written Summaries
After every session, we send a written record of what was discussed and what was suggested, so the conversation has lasting value beyond the meeting itself.
Senior-Led Work
Clients always work with a named senior advisor. Work is not passed to assistants or junior staff without your knowledge and agreement.
No Long-Term Lock-In
Our fixed-price engagements carry no ongoing commitment. The Whole Market Programme can be paused or ended with reasonable notice at any time.
Plain Language
We do not dress advice in jargon. Suggestions are written and spoken in clear, direct language that any owner can act on without needing a specialist to interpret them.
Our Values
Small Business Advisory the Way It Should Feel
Running a small business in Malaysia involves a particular set of pressures that large-firm advisors rarely understand from the inside. Cash flow cycles here move differently. Family considerations often sit alongside operational ones. The decision to expand, restructure, or pull back carries personal weight that a spreadsheet cannot fully capture.
Mentari has spent over a decade working specifically with owner-operated businesses in Penang and the surrounding region. That focus means our advisors understand the local context — the seasonal rhythms of trade, the dynamics of hiring in a mid-sized city, the particular challenges of moving from sole trader to employer — in ways that translate directly into practical, relevant suggestions.
Our advisory work draws on broad experience across food and beverage, retail, light manufacturing, professional services, and trades. We do not specialise narrowly in one sector. Instead, we bring cross-sector perspective to each engagement, which often helps owners see patterns and possibilities they might otherwise miss.
We are a small practice and intend to remain one. That is a deliberate choice, not a limitation. It means that every client is genuinely known to us, that sessions are given full attention, and that the advice offered reflects a real understanding of the individual situation rather than a template applied from a distance.
